Licensing Visuals for Music Videos

What filmmakers, musicians and editors need to know before using licensed visual loops in a music video.

Visual loops can give a music video a complete world without requiring a location shoot. They work as backgrounds, projected scenery, screen content, transitions, textures and full-frame sequences. The creative part is usually straightforward. The question people get stuck on is whether the licence still covers a commercial release, a client project or a monetised upload.

With a Visualdon loop licence, commercial use inside a music video is allowed. That includes a video made for your own music and paid editing or production work for a client. The important distinction is that the loop becomes one element of the finished video rather than being redistributed as the product itself.

What a music-video licence needs to cover

Before choosing stock visuals, confirm that the licence permits commercial projects, online distribution, client work and editing. “Free to download” does not automatically grant any of those rights. A marketplace subscription may also impose rules about registering each project or keeping the subscription active.

Using loops as part of your own edit

Colour grading, cropping, speed changes, compositing and adding effects are all normal uses. A loop can fill the background behind an artist, appear on a screen inside a 3D scene, or become a texture within a larger composition.

The restriction is against redistributing the source asset. Do not place the original MP4 in a client delivery folder, template or project archive that an unlicensed person can access. Deliver the rendered music video. If the client or another editor needs the source file, that person needs their own licence.

Music videos, YouTube and Content ID

A licensed loop may appear in a YouTube upload, including a monetised music video. However, you must not register the loop itself with Content ID or another automated rights-management system. The same visual may be licensed by other creators, so claiming exclusive ownership would create false matches against their legitimate work.

Your music, performance and finished edit remain yours. The restriction applies to claiming ownership of the shared source loop, not to publishing the video you made with it.

Do labels and agencies need separate licences?

The Visualdon licence is per person. If one editor buys and uses the file, one licence is enough for that editor’s work. If several people need access to the source loop, purchase a licence for each person. The quantity selector on the product page is there for teams and studios.

A client does not need a licence merely to receive and publish the finished render. They need one only if you give them the source loop or they intend to use it themselves in another project.

Choosing visuals that survive compression

Music platforms compress video heavily. Fine noise, tiny particles and very dark gradients can break into blocks after upload. Bold shapes, controlled movement and clear contrast usually survive better. Test a short private upload before final delivery, especially when the visual contains large areas of near-black colour.
